Diagnosed cases of diabetes have risen by more than 145,000 in the space of a year, new figures have shown.
Information from GP practices shows that more than 2.6 million people in the UK are now registered as having diabetes, the charity Diabetes UK has warned after analysing data from the quality and outcomes framework, which was published on Monday.
The charity also highlighted that the data showed that well over 5.2 million people were registered as obese in the UK, and therefore at risk of developing diabetes if they do not have it already.
Diabetes UK chief executive Douglas Smallwood said: “Many, but not all, people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, therefore we need to do all we can to raise awareness of diabetes and help people understand how following a balanced diet and leading an active lifestyle can help reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
“If we don’t stop the rising tides of obesity and diabetes, millions will face a future of ill-health and will put an ever-growing strain on NHS resources,” he added.
