Talking about testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with your new partner is the most important indicator that the relationship will last, according to new research.
A Populus poll involving over 1,000 young adults found that discussing the issue of STI testing was more important than previously traditional relationship milestones.
Only 66% said meeting the parents was a sign of a lasting relationship, while only 40% said meeting friends was important.
The Chlamydia Worth Talking About campaign commissioned the poll, which provided a snapshot of the way modern relationships function in the UK.
The survey also revealed that 47% thought not always having to wear make-up was a sign of a lasting relationship and being given space in the cupboard to leave clothes was cited by 30%.
But despite respondents aspiring to have a conversation about STIs with new partners, in reality the subject was often not raised.
The poll showed that 73% had never spoken about the subject of STIs with a partner before having sex for the first time and 30% were not happy to ask a new partner to use a condom.
Public health minister Gillian Merron said: “STIs can be a difficult subject to talk about, but it’s encouraging that young couples are starting to see beyond that.
“The Government’s Chlamydia. Worth Talking About campaign aims to get young people discussing STIs and saying “yes” to chlamydia tests.”

If you cant talk to your partner about STI's, previous testing or even wearing a condom!! maybe you shouldnt be in a relationship or having sex!
