Constipation in children effectively managed with macrogol

Children with constipation who are treated with macrogol (polyethylene glycol PEG) have consistently good outcomes

This is the conclusion of a systemic review of seven studies involving 594 children with constipation. Five studies compared macrogol with lactulose, one with milk of magnesia and one with a placebo.

Macrogol was found to be more effective that a placebo and the authors concluded from the evidence that it was more effective than lactulose.

They suggest that macrogol is an effective and well tolerated treatment for childhood constipation.
