Each year in the UK about 25,000 people develop epilepsy (Walker and Shorvon, 1999), making it the most common serious neurological condition. Seizures are a symptom of a disease (Sander and Hart, 1997a: 13), just as a sneeze may be a symptom of influenza, and they may be the first indication that something is not right.
