Antiviral drugs 'no risk' to mothers

There is no associated increased risk of major birth defects for mothers who are exposed to the antiviral drugs acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir in their first trimester of pregnancy, a Danish study has found.

The drugs are used to treat a herpes infection which is common in women in the first months of their pregnancies.

The study included 837, 795 babies born in Denmark from January 1996 to September 2008.
