Chair appointed for new pharmacy regulator

A chair has been appointed to the General Pharmaceutical Council, the new independent regulator for pharmacy.

Robert Nicholls will hold the post for four years and will chair the new 14-member Council.

The new Council will replace the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain as the regulator for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

It has been developed new standards to provide a clearer framework for pharmacy services. Health Minister Ann Keen said: ‘The new General Pharmaceutical Council will modernise and strengthen the regulation of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. It will also ensure that patient safety is at the heart of pharmacy services and support professional development.’

Robert Nicholls said: ‘It is exciting to be involved in the creation of a new organisation, particularly one aimed at improving patient safety and enhancing confidence in pharmacy, at a time when the vital role of pharmacists is being extensively developed.’
