Nurse prescribers to issue 'off label' medicines
Nurse independent prescribers are now able to prescribe ‘off label’ and unlicensed medicines
From January 1st 2010 the Drug Tariff has been amended to allow nurse independent prescribers to prescribe licensed medicines for uses outside of their licensed indications (“off-licence” or “off-label”). These drugs should only be prescribed where it is accepted clinical practice.
They can also prescribe unlicensed medicines for their patients, on the same basis as doctors and supplementary prescribers as well as borderline substances, which have been approved by the Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances (ACBS).
A list of ACBS approved products and the circumstances under which they can be prescribed, can be found in part XV of the Drug Tariff.
Further information about these changes can be found on the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating committee website.
