A cancer nurse from Manchester has been recognised for introducing an innovative service that has slashed the average length of patient stays.
Christie NHS Foundation Trust nurse Steve Hill has been named the winner of this year’s Excellence on Oncology Nursing category at the Excellence in Oncology Awards.
Mr Hill developed the UK’s first nurse-led, day case abdominal paracentesis service dedicated to oncology patients. The service has reduced hospital stays by more than 80 per cent, and delivered time and cost savings in consultant radiologist and medical workload.
The judges described Mr Hill’s entry as “head and shoulders above the rest. Steve is to be congratulated and recognised for his forward vision, diligence and determination in driving the project from conception to completion,” the judges said.
The nurse-led chemotherapy service at Kent Oncology Centre was highly commended and the oncology nursing team at St George’s Hospital in London was also commended.
The awards are run by Pfizer and the British Oncological Association.
BOA president Richard Sainsbury, consultant breast surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “It was a pleasure to review this year’s entries – three times as many as last year. It is encouraging to reflect that the winners represent only a small sample of the outstanding work going on across the UK.”
