Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSCancer survivors to pilot tailored care plans
Cancer survivors in Yorkshire and Humber have been chosen to trial a new NHS “survivorship plan” that will provide care and services for those living with and beyond the disease.
The national cancer survivorship initiative, a joint venture by the Department of Health and Macmillan Cancer Support, aims to ensure cancer survivors in the region are offered tailored care and support to help them manage their future health and stay healthy post-cancer.
Health minister Ann Keen said: “The impact of cancer does not end after treatment. Cancer survivors, their carers and families need support and services to meet their needs.
“That is why we have teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Support and are making a firm commitment that by 2012 all cancer survivors will receive the support and services they need.”
NHS Yorkshire and the Humber regional public health director Paul Johnstone said: “Every patient is different so we feel it is important that those we are caring for get tailor-made treatment that addresses their needs specifically.”
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust will all take part in the pilot scheme.
