QNI calendar marks 150 years of district nursing

The Queen’s Nursing Institute has released a wall calendar for 2010 as part of its activities to mark the 150th anniversary of district nursing.

The calendar features archive photographs, showing district nurses at work from the 1940s to the 1970s. All the photographs show real nurses treating real patients at home, in infant welfare clinics, travelling, or other aspects of their work in the early years of the NHS.

Rosemary Cook CBE, director of the QNI said: “The calendar is an amazing insight into the life and work of nurses in the early years of the NHS and shows how far community nursing has come since those days – and yet how much has remained the same in terms of the importance of the relationship between nurse and patient. I think many nurses will want it as a celebration of community nursing for their clinics, surgeries and offices. And their patients will love it!”
