Government launches elderly health and fitness initiative
Gentle exercise and basic footcare are part of the prescription in the government’s new programme to keep older people fit and healthy.
The Older People’s Prevention Package sets out how preventing health problems before they occur can help older people live better and healthier lives.
It sets out what screening services older people are entitled to, such as sight tests, flu vaccination, and cancer screening; outlines effective falls prevention measures; and introduces measures to increase access to affordable footcare services.
Other services, including continence care, and treatment for arthritis and depression will be included in the package at a later date.
Dr Finbarr Martin, acting national clinical director for older people, said: ‘This prevention package is about raising the expectations of older people about what their local services can do to help prevent unnecessary loss of mobility and independence.’
