Poorer children given cochlear implants experience more complications and worse compliance with follow-up regimens, US research has found.
The research, involving 133 children, found there was almost a five-fold increase in complications among children who received government health insurance, rather than private insurance – an indicator of lower socioeconomic status.
Major complications occurred in almost 12 per cent of cases among the poorer families and around 3 percent among the better off families.
