More drugs on prescribers’ list
Independent nurse prescribers could be allowed to prescribe any controlled drug from next month.
Home Office approval for the change is expected in late April, after it has finished considering recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, said Paul Robinson,
Department of Health policy lead on non-medical prescribing, at an RCN conference in London this month.
The government has already laid legal changes before parliament that will allow nurses to prescribe controlled drugs.
RCN prescribing adviser Matt Griffiths said: ‘We have been lobbying for these changes to come for sometime – this will make a real difference to nurses at the coalface.’
