NHS England’s 6Cs Live! Story of the Month for November has been won by Jane Brand
NHS England’s 6cs Live! Story of the Month for November has been won by Jane Brand, an inspirational community mental health nurse at Cheshire and the Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Jane’s dedication and commitment to her patients really impressed the judging panel, particularly how she helped turn around the life of Cheryl, a service user with a long history of mental illness.
Jane tells of how she was determined to help Cheryl:
“When I returned to work after my maternity leave I saw a real deterioration in Cheryl’s condition. She didn’t want to accept treatment and struggled to keep her tenancy, eventually becoming homeless.
“I would go home worrying about where she was and what was happening to her. Being homeless, Cheryl would change GP frequently so it was difficult to find her and offer help.
“I was determined to track her down though and spent evenings in Liverpool looking for her. When I did find and assess her it was best for Cheryl that she should be detained under the Mental Health Act.
“After time in hospital it was difficult to persuade care providers to consider her for residential care due to her history but a plan I presented to the mental health panel was successful in convincing them. I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to see Cheryl now moving into her new home.
“When we went to visit her new flat Cheryl said thank you for everything I’ve done – it was few words that meant so much.”
Jane’s hard work and commitment has meant that Cheryl’s mental wellbeing has improved and she is now willingly engaging with services.
Peter Evans, team manager at Cheshire and the Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“Jane has shown true compassion, care and commitment, over and above the call of duty, by advocating for and supporting Cheryl to lead a better life. It has been a long process but the care Jane has shown over the last 18 months has really paid off.
“But whilst she has dedicated so much of her time to Cheryl she has never compromised the care of her other patients – she is a real credit to our profession.”
After reading about Jane’s commitment to her patients the 6Cs Live! judging panel were in no doubt that it was November’s winning entry.
Sam Sherrington, Head of Nursing and Midwifery Strategy at NHS England, said:
“Despite an exceptional standard of entries this month it was clear to us that Jane’s commitment to Cheryl was both life changing and inspirational.
“Jane demonstrated compassionate care at its best, gaining Cheryl’s trust and building her confidence. She showed a real determination to do the best she could for her and is a well-deserved winner.
“We know that there are so many more stories like Jane’s out there and we want to showcase them so please tell us your story.”
Cheryl recently moved into her new flat and thanks to Jane has a much more stable future.
