COPD patients aided by antibiotics

Taking antibiotics can help patients with mild-to-moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Spanish researchers have found.

They randomised 310 patients to receive amoxicillin/clavulanate (500/125mg) or placebo three times daily for eight days.

Median time to next exacerbation was 233 days in the antibiotics group, compared to 160 for placebo.

“Our study supports the use of antibiotics to treat mild to moderate airway obstruction,” the authors said online in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
