Half of former smokers with COPD have inflamed lungs

Around half of former smokers who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have low-grade systemic inflammation of their lungs, according to research.

The Chilean study found that 56 of 104 former smokers with COPD had inflamed lungs.

A health assessment also showed these patients had a greater degree of lung hyper-inflammation than non-smokers, as well as a poorer quality of life.
