Campaign to focus on sleep deprivation in young families

Tackling sleep deprivation in young families will be a key public health campaign for the new Institute of Health Visiting, founded last week.

Speaking at the organisation’s launch in London, its founding director Cheryll Adams said: “We know sleep deprivation is a real issue for new families. Lack of sleep leads to lots of health issues, including post-natal depression, relationship break-ups, violence and accidents.”

The institute will survey health visitors, and develop training and resources to help them offer “consistent and high-quality evidence-based support” to parents so they can effectively manage sleep difficulties in pre-school children.

The Sleep Well Campaign will also work with partner organisations, Netmums and the Royal Society for Public Health, and the media to promote the importance of sleep as a major public health issue.

As reported earlier this month, the institute has been set up to “promote excellence in health visiting practice to benefit all children, families and communities”.

The launch was attended by health minister Dr Dan Poulter and Viv Bennett, the Department of Health’s director of nursing.
