Extra 69 community nurses recruited for Staffordshire

Nearly 70 community nurses have been recruited to work in North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Partnership Trust has recruited 29 nurses to work in Stoke and 37 to work in Newcastle-under-Lyme and the Staffordshire Moorlands.

Dr David Hughes, clinical accountable officer for North Staffordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We have invested in community nursing to ensure the service remains of the highest quality and responsive to the needs of patients and carers while providing the best experience of health care.

“We will continue to work with the Partnership Trust colleagues to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.”

Earlier this week the Royal College of Nursing warned that district nurses were “critically endangered” and faced extinction by the end of 2025 if urgent investment was not made.

The past decade has seen a 47% fall in qualified district nursing staff numbers in England. But research commissioned by the RCN predicts the present shortage of district nurses will get worse, with 35% currently over 50 years old and approaching retirement.

The report follows a survey by the Queen’s Nursing Institute, which was published at the start of June and raised similar concerns about the morale and staffing of district nursing teams.
