Chief executive announced for new NHS training agency

National director of quality Ian Cumming has been named as the first chief executive of Health Education England.

The former chair of NHS West Midlands, Mr Cumming, will now lead HEE as it looks to develop the new education and training landscape in the NHS.

He will oversee the role of Local Education and Training Boards and the increased involvement of NHS employers in training the next generation of healthcare workers.

Mr Cumming said: “We have a great opportunity to shape a future healthcare workforce that can improve healthcare outcomes, building services around the needs of patients and communities.

“HEE will lead the new system to support healthcare providers and professionals as they identify the critical workforce challenges and ensure services have the right people with the right skills and behaviours, where and when they are needed.”

Mr Cumming was due to take on the role of chief executive at North Bristol Trust earlier this year, but ruled himself out in order to continue his focus on overseeing quality during the transition period.

He will continue to perform this role at the Department of Health for a short period while HEE is established.
