Seventeen nurses feature on list of Queen's birthday honours
A leading nursing and wound care researcher has been made a dame in the Queen’s birthday honours list.
Nicky Cullum, professor of nursing at the University of Manchester, is one of the UK’s leading nurse researchers and specialises in particular in wound care.
She has led major multi-centre trials, which have delivered significant impact on nursing practice, and also founded the Cochrane Wounds Group, the world’s first centre for evidence-based nursing.
In a statement, Professor Cullum said she was “overwhelmed, shocked and surprised”, and paid tribute to the many community nurses that had helped her with her research.
“I look at conditions like leg ulcers and bedsores to see how to improve treatments. It’s the less glamorous side of nursing but it affects thousands of patients and is something nurses have to treat and deal with every day,” she said.
“I’ve worked with hundreds of community nurses who, as well as doing their demanding day jobs, have helped me to gather research with no extra pay or recognition. This honour is as much for those nurses and researchers who have worked on the research as it is for me,” she added.
The Queen’s birthday honours list, unveiled on Friday night, also contains OBEs for seven nurses and MBEs for a further seven.
OBE recipients comprise four nurse consultants, and three nurses involved in education and academia – including Sue Bernhauser, former chair of the Council of Deans of Health, and Monica Fletcher, chief executive of long-term conditions education charity Education for Health.
Two nurses were also among the recipients of the British Empire Medal for community work, which was re-introduced last year as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Overall health made up 7% of all the honours given out, according to the Cabinet Office.
