Crohn’s and Colitis UK has launched an online tool for patients with inflammatory bowel disease to measure their fatigue levels.
Patients will be able to measure the severity and impact of their fatigue “objectively” using a new IBD Fatigue Scale, said the charity, which developed the tool in partnership with researchers at King’s College London and Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust.
“Some doctors and nurses are unaware of how much fatigue can affect people with IBD”
The charity said it believed the initiative was a “ground-breaking advance” that would change standard practice by helping patients to talk directly with their clinicians using the formal structure of the fatigue rating scale.
The ratings scale was based on survey research published earlier this year in the Journal of Crohn’s & Colitis, which confirmed the “burdensome” nature of fatigue for patients with IBD.
Helen Terry, director of patient support and information at Crohn’s and Colitis UK, said: “Some doctors and nurses are unaware of how much fatigue can affect people with IBD and many do not ask about it during an appointment.
“We are asking everyone with IBD to make sure that they have told their healthcare professionals about this under recognised symptom and suggest that they use this IBD Fatigue Scale to enable them to formally discuss their fatigue with their medical teams,” she said.
