Doncaster nurses due to begin strike action today

Learning disability nurses are set to begin strike action lasting seven days this week in Doncaster.

The strike will begin on Thursday outside the Care UK office before moving to locations in the centre of Doncaster over the following days until it ends with a rally on 5 March.

As revealed earlier this month by Nursing Times, the nurses have voted to strike over cuts in pay and conditions.

The supported living service, which works with more than 140 adults with learning disabilities and includes 24-hour care, was taken over by Care UK in September last year.

Staff have been asked to accept new terms and conditions that would mean reduced payments for working unsociable hours, reduced annual leave and a move to statutory maternity/paternity provision and sick pay.

Unison balloted members last week, with 96% of 118 votes cast in favour of a seven-day strike, though Care UK has insisted its plan was necessary to keep the service viable.

Alongside you in spirit lads and lassies. Where there's a will. Best wishes to all of you who are using your democratic right to say 'No', possibly, probably, very soon that will be gone too. Use it whilst you can. Time for action is long overdue, but good on you's for reaching breaking point and deciding enough is enough.
