Liaison nurse post to improve GP care for learning disability patients

Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber Foundation Trust has appointed a specialist primary liaison nurse to help improve the general health of its learning disabilities patients.

Jayne Thompson has already taken up the post with the trust’s learning disability health action team, where she will work closely with colleagues in primary care as well as patients, their families and carers.

She will offer support and advice when learning disability patients access primary care services for routine GP appointments or screening, and encourage them to undergo annual health checks.

Ms Thompson said: “People with learning disabilities tend to have poorer health than the general population and may have difficulty in recognising illness, communicating their needs, or generally using health services.

“This role is all about supporting them through the process, making information easy to understand and training primary care health professionals in how to provide care in the right way for people with learning disabilities,” she added.

Ms Thompson will also be working closely with GPs to encourage people to undergo regular health checks, and dental and optical services to provide accessible and easy read information about eye checks, eye care and dental care.

The trust already has an acute liaison nurse, who provides similar support in Doncaster for people with learning disabilities in hospital settings.
