Former nurse appointed to senior post at Devon trust

Kevin Baber has been appointed as the new chief operating officer of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

His starting date at Plymouth Hospitals will be agreed shortly, the trust said.

Originally qualifying as a nurse in 1986, Mr Baber is currently chief executive of the Peninsula Community Health social enterprise.

Mr Baber oversaw its creation in October 2011, when the community services arm of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly was split from is commissioning arm under the transforming community services programme.

Mr Baber has also previously been managing director of community health services for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly and a general manager at the Bournemouth Nuffield Hospital.

His appointment was made following a day of sequential panel interviews involving nurses and other clinicians, staff and governors from Plymouth Hospitals.

Trust chief executive Ann James said: “I am really pleased that Kevin has accepted this role with us. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from a variety of roles in the healthcare sector, which will be extremely beneficial to our trust.

“As we seek to transform our services, working with other organisations in health and social care to take a more integrated approach for the benefit of patients, Kevin’s experience will stand us in good stead to help shape real change.”

Peninsula Community Health said in a statement that recruitment for a new chief executive would begin immediately.

In the meantime, Helen Newson, director of nursing and professional practice, will become acting chief executive with effect from Mr Baber’s departure.
