Manchester burns specialist named Nurse of the Year

Jacky Edwards, from University Hospital of South Manchester, was last night named “Nurse of the Year” at the Nursing Times Awards in London.

Ms Edwards was among the recipients of 18 awards given to outstanding and inspiring members of the nursing profession last night at our annual awards ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane.

She became the UK’s first burns nurse consultant in 2010 and has published over 30 research papers on burn wound care.

Susan Atkins, from Portsmouth Hospitals, was high commended for her work in campaigning to extend the scope of alcohol nurse specialist services.

Nurses from the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals won the Team of the Year Award for their work on tackling drug use, knife crime and smoking in schools.

The paediatric day surgery team from Blackpool Teaching Hospitals was high commended in this category.

Meanwhile, the Lifetime Achievement Award – chosen by the UK’s four chief nursing officers – was June Andrews.

Professor Andrews, who is currently director of the Dementia Services Development Centre, is an internationally known psychiatric and general trained nurse.

The CNO’s agreed that she was a “worthy winner” of the award for her exceptional work in dementia care, which they considered to be pioneering, dedicated and broad in its impact.

More than 1,000 nurses attended the event, including the chief nursing officers of England, Scotland and Wales, Department of Health director of nursing Viv Bennett, Royal College of Nursing chief executive and general secretary Peter Carter and Unison head of nursing Gail Adams.

Dr Dan Poulter was the guest speaker at the ceremony, which was hosted by Nursing Times editor Jenni Middleton.
