More commissioners announce backing for Speak Out Safely
Three more clinical commissioning groups have signed up to support our Speak Out Safely campaign.
CCGs are the GP-led organisations that took over commissioning NHS service from primary care trusts in April, under the government’s reform of the health service’s structure.
The three latest commissioning organisations to announce their support for the Speak Out Safely campaign are NHS North Durham CCG in the North East, NHS Shropshire CCG in the Midlands and NHS Blackburn with Darwen CCG in the North West.
In its statement pledging support for the campaign, Shropshire CCG said: “Every member of our staff, our member practices and the staff employed by those health and care organisations that we commission… should feel able to raise concerns about wrongdoing or poor practice when they see it and are confident that their concerns will be addressed in a constructive way.”
Meanwhile, Blackburn with Darwen CCG said supporting the Speak Out Safely campaign meant it encouraged “any staff member who has a genuine patient safety concern to raise this within the organisation at the earliest opportunity”.
“Patient safety is our prime concern and our staff are often best placed to identify where care may be falling below the standard our patients deserve,” it said in its supporting statement.
Three CCGs from the North West have already signed up to support the campaign, starting with NHS East Lancashire CCG in August. It was joined in September by Liverpool and East Cheshire.
The Speak Out Safely campaign launched earlier this year by Nursing Times aims to make it easier for staff to raise legitimate concerns about patient safety.
One of our key aims is for all trusts to pledge their support for the campaign and add specific protection for staff raising concerns to whistleblowing policies.
