A new national leadership development programme for frontline nurses and midwives in England has now opened for applications.
The Frontline Nursing and Midwifery Programme is aimed at all nurses and midwives working in organisations providing NHS-funded care.
The NHS Leadership Academy, which is running the programme, said it would help frontline staff “to make a difference to people’s lives” by developing the skills needed to reflect on their strengths, role and ability to do what they came into the profession to do.
It will be delivered over six months and taught through a mix of online learning and face-to-face workshops.
The first cohorts will start the programme in April 2014, with more starting across the country each month after that.
It is hoped more than 5,000 frontline nurses and midwives will start the programme this year.
Karen Lynas, the deputy managing director of the NHS Leadership Academy, said: “The programme is a major investment by the NHS in its staff and I hope that thousands will seize this incredible opportunity – to make improvements to services, support colleagues in their teams and organisations, and for themselves.”
Jane Cummings, chief nursing officer of England, added: “I’m delighted to welcome the Frontline nursing and midwifery programme.
“This programme will support nurses and midwives in developing the skills and confidence to make changes where they are most needed,” she said.
Recruitment to the programme is on-going and places will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
