Six NHS organisations in top 'gay friendly' employers list

Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust has been judged to be the most gay-friendly health sector employer in the country.

The 2013 Workplace Equality Index, compiled by charity Stonewall, was unveiled earlier this week.

The annual list is a tool for employers to measure their efforts to tackle discrimination and create inclusive workplaces for lesbian, gay and bisexual employees.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust was rated number four in the index, the highest healthcare organisation in the list this year.

However, only five other health sector organisations made the top 100 of the index.

These were London Ambulance Service Trust at number 22; South East Coast Ambulance Service at 35; Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation Trust at 58; and Liverpool Community Health Trust and Kent Community Health Trust jointly at 86.

Stonewall chief executive Ben Summerskill said: “Every employer in the top 100 has performed impressively.

“These results are significant, as it’s just 10 years since we won vital legal protections for gay people in the workplace.”

Overall management consultant Accenture topped the list; in second place was housing company Gentoo and the Co-operative was third.

  • Sad that there is any need for this sort of league table...
I suppose we will never totally eradicate the knuckle dragging mentality of bigots, but eventually it would be nice to think that we could ignore colur, sex creed etc and just have people employed irrespective of such typings...
