Trust looks to Portugal for new nursing recruits


Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust is planning to recruit nurses from Portugal amid staffing shortages and an over-reliance on temporary staff.

Board papers for July said that half of all spend on temporary nurses was to cover vacancies. A quarter was due to increasing workload.

The trust is now working on how it will cut its turnover rate among nursing staff.

The papers said: “We are recruiting from Portugal for band 5 nursing posts and continue to look at what other innovative options are available to us to attract staff to hard to fill posts as well as newly qualified staff and experienced band 6 nurses.”

Spend on nursing temporary staff at the trust fell in June to £895,000, from £973,000 in May.

The trust’s workforce cost improvement plan was reported to have delivered a 45.73 whole time equivalent reduction, against a target of 54.05.

  • This is already happening in London trusts regardless of the fact that Portugese recruits are mostly newly qualified with no experience of working post qualification. This leads to the question of why the trusts are not employing the current batch of student nurses who have been trained and paid for by the trusts in question.

  • we employed a whole load of portuguese nurses last year, the majority fo whom are excellent, however its the same old probelm - retention, half of them have left the first 2 within the first fortnight, surely the trusts need to to look more at valuing and retaining staff instead of expensive aganecy staff and the costs of constantly recuiting at whatever level

  • Recruiting from overseas when there are so many nationals and imigrants looking for work. Surely it would be better to take English speaking post grads on part-time with two-for-one posts fpr those who have families and cant do long shifts. More work for the UK please, "We Deserve it!"

  • I went abroad and it was the best decision I ever made. Also enjoyed working with two excellent and very friendly Portuguese nurses in an international multi culti hospital.

  • The same as above I went abroad and definitely do not regeret it! Providing the Portugese nurses are not all post grads they should be ok!
