Yorkshire trust appoints new nursing director

A new director of nursing has been appointed by Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.

The Yorkshire trust has appointed Julie Dawes, currently nursing director at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

She said: “I am really looking forward to joining the trust and returning home to my roots after 25 years in the south of the country.

“I am strongly committed to continuing to improve patient care and hope that my expertise in patient safety, patient experience and quality will help the trust and its nursing population build on the work it has already done in becoming an excellent organisation,” she added.

Ms Dawes, originally from Hebden Bridge, has worked in hospitals in Leeds, Southampton and Portsmouth.

During her time at Portsmouth she has been credited with overseeing complaints about nursing care fall by 50% in 12 months as well helping the trust gain “most improved” status for its cancer care and strengthening nurse leadership at all levels.

Ms Dawes will succeed Helen Thomson who retires from the trust next year after 25 years.

Ms Thomson joined the former Huddersfield NHS Trust as head of midwifery in 1989 and has been director of nursing since the merger of the Calderdale and Huddersfield trusts in 2001. She has also been deputy chief executive since 2006.

Trust chief executive Owen Williams said: “In Helen, the trust board was fortunate to have a professional, caring, deeply dedicated nurse advising us on the best way forward for our patients through many NHS changes over the years. She will be missed by us all.

“I look forward to welcoming Julie in April next year and she will bring with her a wealth of experience that will continue to take nursing forward in the years to come.”
