10% of newly admitted psychiatric patients self-harm

Around 10% of psychiatric patients self-harm whilst admitted to an acute psychiatric ward, according to research by Kings College London online in the Journal of Clinical Nursing.

They collected data on the first two weeks of admission for 522 psychiatric inpatients.

One in 10 patients self-harmed, and 4% attempted suicide.

The authors said: “Incidents occurred soon after admission and sometimes repeatedly during the course of a day. Assessment of risk should be completed as early as possible.”
