Baby death charity nurse addresses reception at No. 10

A mental health nurse from Northamptonshire has been thanked by Samantha Cameron for her work supporting parents who have experienced stillbirth and neonatal death.

Vanessa Kinsey-Thatcher, a child and adolescent mental health nurse at Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, recently visited 10 Downing Street to speak about her charity work.

She was invited to a reception by Ms Cameron on 19 November, along with other representatives from the stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands.

Ms Kinsey-Thatcher became involved with Sands in 2007 after losing her first daughter in 2006 – she has subsequently gone on to have two healthy daughters and is now a trustee of the charity.

She said: “I became involved with Sands initially because of my personal experience but I now work with the charity to help provide bereaved parents with support through individual befriending and meetings to find some comfort at this tragic time.

“I was delighted to be invited to the Downing Street reception to talk about the important work that Sands does,” she added.

David and Samantha Cameron lost their first child, Ivan, in February 2009. Ivan, who had cerebral palsy and epilepsy, was six years old.

In her day job, Ms Kinsey-Thatcher is Northamptonshire Healthcare’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender specialist nurse, where she supports young people who have mental health needs relating to their sexuality or gender identity.

A spokesman for Sands said: “We were very pleased to be invited to Downing Street as anything that helps raise the profile of our charity is always welcome.

“We are very grateful for the work of people like Vanessa and all our other volunteers,” he added.
