French nurse 'rents out' breasts to gay parents
A French nurse has placed an advert online offering to rent out her breasts to gay couples who cannot breastfeed their own children.
The 29-year-old new mother posted the unusual offer on the website e-loue.com, whose motto is: “With e-loue.com, everything is up for rent”.
The rental, which costs 100 euro (£86) per day, is thought to be the first commercial venture of its kind since France legalised gay marriage and adoption earlier this year, but medical professionals have branded it a health hazard.
The advert, posted by “cecelia232” living in the Parisian suburb of Boulogne, reads: “I am a young mother in full health, a trained nurse, 29 years old, and I’m renting out my breasts to feed young babies. In one day I can offer you up to a dozen feeds for your baby.
“Breastfeeding allows babies to be in the best of health, but gay men in couples don’t have the option of breastfeeding their babies. In fact, breast milk gives them full nutrition. Contact me through the site. Don’t bother if you’re not serious.”
She has reportedly received at least 15 requests for her services, but the posting has sparked controversy in France.
The website’s lawyers insist the offer is perfectly legal, but the country’s public health laws state that it is illegal to sell breast milk for profit and any donated milk must pass through a designated milk bank.
Alexandre Woog, head of e-loue.com, said the young mother had been vetted to make sure everything was above board, although he advised her to be careful before accepting any requests.
He also said that neither he nor the woman involved had any strong views on gay marriage and adoption.
“She has no political message to deliver. This is a true service rendered, a sort of modernisation of the role of the wet nurse,” he added.
