New booklet promotes healthy lifestyle during pregnancy
The government’s Start4Life campaign has published guidance for midwives on helping patients recognise the risks of an unhealthy lifestyle during pregnancy.
A booklet, called Healthy Habits for Baby and You, has been written to bring together key information for women and give midwives a tool to help them to have conversations about potentially sensitive subjects, such as obesity.
It includes healthy recipes and tips, myth busters and exercise suggestions.
The guidance was launched this month by health minister Dan Poulter at the Royal College of Midwives annual conference.
Dr Poulter said: “Obesity is one of the biggest public health challenges we face, and… it’s an issue midwives see in the women they look after time and time again.
“One way to tackle obesity is to reach out to pregnant women to help them live healthier lifestyles to give their babies the best possible start in life. Midwives play an invaluable role in providing this personalised care and support.”
