Devon hospital introduces new nurse consultant role

The post of consultant nurse for older people has been created by the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Fondation Trust to champion the complex and specialist needs of older patients.

Debbie Cheeseman will lead the specialist training of clinical staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, as well as being on hand to provide practical help and advice for colleagues on high standards of care of older people.

She will also help develop a network of ‘dementia care champions’ among nurses, medics, allied healthcare professionals and support staff.

In addition to frontline activity, Ms Cheeseman will also contribute to the strategic planning of hospital services and facilities so that the specific needs of older patients are met.

She was previously the matron of the hospital’s Kenn and Bovey Wards.
