Mencap's hotline backs Nursing Times' SOS campaign

A whistleblowing helpline run by a leading UK learning disability charity has pledged its support for our Speak Out Safely campaign.

“At the Whistleblowing Helpline, we often receive calls from nurses who are wondering whether or how to raise concerns at work,” said Rosemary Crockett, policy manager at Mencap.

“We know that individuals can often feel isolated and unsupported when they do raise concerns, and we are impressed by the long-term commitment Nursing Times has made to support whistleblowing in the public interest. 

“We too want an NHS that is honest and transparent, where staff are actively encouraged to raise concerns and protected from bad treatment when they do.”

The quality of care for people with learning disabilities was the subject of a high profile BBC Panorama programme last year, when nurse Terry Bryan blew the whistle on the Winterbourne View care home.

The helpline is commissioned by the Department of Health and serves all employees and organisations working within the NHS and social care.

The Speak Out Safely Campaign launched earlier this year and has three aims.

We want the government to introduce a statutory duty of candour compelling health professionals and managers to be open about care failings and trusts to add specific protection for staff raising concerns to their whistleblowing policies.

We also want the government to undertake a wholesale review of the Public Interest Disclosure Act, to ensure whistleblowers are fully protected.
