Nurses thanked for response to measles outbreak

Ministers in Wales have thanked nurses and other NHS staff for their response to the Measles outbreak in the Swansea area.

In a statement released on Wednesday, health minister Mark Drakeford said: “More than 1,700 people were vaccinated at special drop-in clinics this weekend, and over 900 people were vaccinated in GP surgeries.

“NHS staff from Public Health Wales and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, primary care staff in particular, have worked hard to make these clinics available and to encourage people to attend. I want to thank them for their dedication.”

On Monday the number of confirmed cases of the disease in south-west Wales had reached 620 – an increase of more than 30 since last Friday.

Public Health Wales has warned that 6,000 children in the Swansea area still have not received their measles jab.

Chief medical officer for Wales Dr Ruth Hussey also urged parents and carers of children who have not had the vaccination to arrange for them to receive it.

“I am pleased to see that so many children and young people attended the extra vaccination clinics over the weekend, but there are still thousands of children who have not had both doses of the MMR jab and so are still at risk from becoming infected with measles.”
