New long-acting contraceptive available

A new long-acting contraceptive option has been licensed in the UK.

The levonorgestrel intrauterine system, marketed as Jaydess, offers women contraceptive protection for up to three years, according to its manufacturer Bayer HealthCare.

It measures 28x30x1.55mm wide with a narrow insertion tube, and works by continuously releasing a low dose of the progestogen hormone levonorgestrel.
