New under-the-skin LARC launched

The first subcutaneously delivered long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) has been launched in the UK.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate (Sayana Press) is administered under the skin into the thigh or abdomen every 13 weeks using a prefilled Uniject injection.

The active ingredient, medroxyprogesterone acetate, is similar to the natural hormone progesterone produced in the ovaries.

The new Uniject device makes it “convenient and straightforward” for a doctor or nurse to administer, according to its manufacturer Pfizer.
