'I always meet nurses who I think would make fantastic managers'

Welcome to Nursing Times’s first leadership week.

All too often I meet nurses who I think would make fantastic managers – either at clinical level or taking on more strategic roles. They have passion, empathy and a vision for what needs to be done – characteristics that, on the whole, just can’t be instilled.

What deters them from moving from their current role is what they don’t know – they are scared of spreadsheets, terrified of not being one of the troops anymore or worried that no one will take them seriously.

Well here’s the news: every manager you’ve ever worked for or met will have a weakness. It could be that they don’t have a head for figures, their presentation skills are poor or they are weak at discipline.

But they all learnt how to compensate for that, delegate their weakest area to someone better able in their team or get help from an expert to help them work on their blind spot.

Being the boss doesn’t mean you have to know everything or be good at it. You just need to demonstrate some of the core competencies and behaviours the job needs.
