Leading London children's nurse gets TV garden makeover
One of the capital’s top community paediatric nurses has received a garden makeover from TV horticulturalist Alan Titchmarsh.
Joan Myers is head of nursing for children’s services and nurse consultant in community children’s nursing at Whittington Health NHS Trust.
She appeared last month on ITV’s Love Your Garden, in which Mr Titchmarsh and his team help “special individuals” across the country “who would really benefit from a new garden”.
Ms Myers, who received an OBE in 2013, was nominated to appear in the programme by the Queen’s Nursing Institute. She is also an ambassador for the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal and was on the inaugural Nursing Times Leaders list, which was announced in April.
The hour-long episode featuring Ms Myers garden in South Norwood, which the programme makers described as a “rundown outside space”, was broadcast at 8pm on Tuesday 29 July.
Notes for the programme said that Ms Myers devoted so much of her time to looking after others that she had let her own garden “become overgrown and certainly not the peaceful retreat she needs”.
Mr Titchmarsh said his aimed to turn the long, thin garden wants into “a soothing oasis outside her backdoor with flavours of Africa and the Caribbean, as well as more than a splash of her favourite colour, purple”.
ITV said people included in the programme “could be an unsung hero or someone dealing with difficult personal circumstances, a fund raiser or just a caring, much loved individual”.
The episode featuring Ms Myers is currently available to view via the ITV Player website.
