School nurses launch website aimed at keeping children healthy

School nurses in Leicestershire have launched what is believed to be the first NHS website specifically aimed at helping children learn how to stay healthy.

The Health for Kids site, which includes games, quizzes and videos, was developed with the help of more than 60 primary schoolchildren.

“Our health specialists have written the content in a way they hope the children will find interesting”

The interactive content was devised by a range of healthcare professionals from Leicestershire NHS Partnership Trust – including specialists in school nursing, paediatrics, mental health, health improvement, smoking cessation and dietetics.

“Health for Kids is a fun educational website from the school nursing service,” said Margaret Clarke, the trust’s lead school nurse, who hoped schools would start using the site from September.

“Our health specialists have written the content in a way they hope the children will find interesting. The children involved have found it to be a fantastic learning opportunity for them as we’ve watched all our ideas come to life,” she added.

The site is divided into different “worlds” and features friendly characters, such as Maggie the School Nurse who provides health tips.

Games include one that gives children the chance to become a heroic school “knight nurse” and treat the ailments of a range of mythical patients.

The site, which has been part-funded by Leicestershire County Council, will also host a secure school health questionnaire for parents of reception year children.

Data from this will help school nurses shape the health and advice services they provide to children and families.
