Nursing student in ‘76

Do as you were told
Warranted a gold
Dared to speak out
You’d receive now’t
Shades of grey in between
What did they mean?

Got on with your work
Never found to lurk
But you may fail, if found
Shirking, slinking around
Crying in the sluice
Feeling of no use

A book of skills in your pocket
Not filled in, you’d get a rocket
Seemed it was a guide
Always by your side.
To the office we would march
Rustling, uniforms full of starch.
