In your place of work do you work traditional shifts or do you work long 12 (or more) hour shifts?

I've got the option of working 3 long 12 hour shifts a week, or doing 5 shorter shifts of 7am-3pm or 12.30-7pm.

I do 5 shorter shifts as this suits me and my homelife better.

I work 12 hour shifts. I asked to start these about 7 years ago to help out with childcare as i was starting a family. Before then, everyone int he hopsital did the usual early, late or nightshifts. But now i know that about 80% of the staff in my ward do and prefer the 12 hour shifts and a lot of the other ward areas including the speciality wards have adopted them. Personally i feel there is better continuity of care whne you are working with the same patients all day and having more time off is better for staff morale.

I don't do nights anymore but I do agree with Allan above, 12 hour shifts do offer a better continutity of care. And having a longer time off is much better for morale. If I'm in work i'd rather stay for longer and have it over and done with!!

I start a new job in a couple of weeks - they'll be 12 hour nights.
