Title: A Nurse’s Guide to Women’s Mental Health

Edited by: Michele R Davidson

Publisher: Springer Publishing Company, 2012

Reviewer: Hannah Marriage, staff nurse, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

What was it like?

This book highlights all of the key issues faced by women who come into contact with the mental health service. The book is easy to read, allowing readers to skip to relevant chapters dependent on  their researching needs.  However, as easy as the book was to read, all of the research used and some of the stressors mentioned are American-specific.  For example,  the author’s discussions around benefits and the cost of paying for treatment.  With these areas in mind  the book could prove unhelpful for UK readers due to the differences between the health service in the United Kingdom and that in US

What were the highlights?

The layout is helpful and the case studies at the end of each chapter allowed the reader  to  conduct  their own personal research to understand and further developtheir knowledge base.

Strengths & Weaknesses:

The book can easily be read as a whole, or by chapter dependent on the reader’s needs. However some of the information is not necessarily relevant to nurses in the United Kingdom.

Who should read it?

Anyone who works within healthcare and cares of women, especially those working in the US.
