Comment on: Debate overview: Collaboration
I think a leadership programme that produces well rounded leaders who understand the NHS as a whole is very important but these people also need to feel some attatchment to the specific organisation they work in. A good leader needs to know the locality and the staff well and how that particular system works and what makes it tick. Leaders who are trained and funded by NHS money should have to stay in the NHS for a certain amount of time to ensure that the public get their value for money. There are pros and cons for national and local schemes and maybe we need a mix of the two systems. Some jobs require a diverse experience where as some jobs benefit from local knowledge.

Comment on: Debate overview: Patient and staff experience
Yes managers should be held to account if there are a lot of poor patient outcomes. You would do the same in private industry. You should expect leaders to lead and to acheive. It is important though that this is done in close collaboration with the frontline work force and that patient and staff veiws are listened to. Too much money is spent on amaging and fire fighting and not on the ground where it is needed.

Comment on: Long days come with a high price for staff and patients
I hated short shifts. Late early was really awful and I felt I was never away from the place. Home at 10.30 back for 7. That can't be good for you. I think nurses are tired and stress because of work load paperwork and nurse patient ratios not long shifts. I areas do go back to shorter shifts then decently priced child care and much more flexible working is a must as well as banning late early shift patterns.

Comment on: Nurses need degrees, like a hole in the head
I have a degree. I didn't do degree level entry as it wasn't available when I trained, but I do object to the idea that all nurses with degrees will not do any basic care and are too academic. I give care , I manage and I feel that the things I have learned via my degree have made more able to take on other professions when advocating for my patients. Having said this I do wonder whether we should have some sort of pre nursing course so that those who can't cut it on a ward are whittled out before they start their nurse training.

Comment on: Sainsbury's refuses to distribute swine flu treatment
I think it is fine that Sainburys have taken this stand. I know of 2 people who collected there own Tamiflu so I am sure many more will. ( i even came across a girl who went out drinking with mates even though she ws symptomatic and was on tamiflu) It isn't like Sainburys are the only place that can be used and will leave people with no collection point.
