Government launches social care review

The prime minister Gordon Brown has announced a six-month review of social care in the UK.

Unless the system is reformed, it will be left facing a shortfall of £6bn within 20 years, said Mr Brown.

But he also added that the current means-tested system can appear unfair and sympathised with families who face having to sell their homes or assets to pay for care services.

He said: 'It is essential that in future there is fairness for those who work hard and save for their retirement.'

Meanwhile the Department of Health has launched a £31m programme to test the viability of innovations such as telecare and telehealth in supporting people with long-term conditions in their homes.
