Most malaria cases not tourists

More than 80% of cases of malaria among UK residents develop after people visit friends or relatives abroad, according to latest figures from the Health Protection Agency.

The figures, for 2009, reveal only 57 of the 722 reported cases among UK travellers were tourists, compared to 584 cases in those visiting friends or relatives abroad.

More than two thirds of cases affected people who had travelled to Africa, with just over 10 per cent of cases affecting people who had travelled to Asia.
