Pregnant smoker rate fails to drop
The proportion of mothers who smoke during pregnancy has barely dropped in the last three years, new Department of Health figures show.
Statistics show that 14.1 per cent of mothers were smoking in the final stages of their pregnancy in 2009/10, compared to 14.4 per cent in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
More than 22 per cent of pregnant women smoked in the North East SHA area, and fewer than 8 per cent smoked in London.
