Prone positioning does not decrease the occurrence of ventilator associated-pneumonia in ICU, according to a recent study.
The study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, looked at whether prone positioning (PP) affects ventilator associated-pneumonia (VAP) and mortality in patients with acute lung injury/adult respiratory distress syndrome.
Results showed that the occurrence of VAP was similar in the PP and control groups. PP did not decrease the occurrence of VAP but might result in a decrease in mortality and benefit sick patients if used for more than one day.
